Sonic Youth covered it memorably on a tribute album to the duo in 1994 called If I. In this particular case, the relationship was not that deep to begin with ( the girl might have been led on), but when Karen Carpenter starts singing the chorus, we all feel sentimental. Of all the Carpenters songs, Superstar is the raunchiest, and possibly the most melancholic, too. We hear the chorus: “don’t you remember you told me you love me you love me baby” and remember that we have had similar feelings of heartbreak. “Superstar” works on a more basic level because people don’t listen to the words of the song, just the feel of the song. The comparison makes you realize how special Karen Carpenters voice was. It is interesting to hear other artists remake these old Carpenter songs. She hears him and his music all the time in her head…oh, no, this time it’s just him on the radio.
